Tandoori Pinwheel Slippers with Winged-Elephant Raita
“Shoes on the platter. Elephant cleared for takeoff.”
Crisp naan slippers carry spicy tandoori-chicken pastry wheels beside a majestic cucumber-winged elephant sculpted from mint raita. It is dinner, aviation, and a deeply unnecessary footwear parade conducted with Michelin-star confidence.

MAKE IT
Method
- 01
Heat the oven to 200°C (400°F) and line two baking sheets with parchment. This is now the official runway, and ordinary snacks no longer have landing clearance.
- 02
Heat the olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Add the chicken and cook for 6–8 minutes, breaking it into small crumbles as though interrogating it about a missing crown.
- 03
Add the garlic, ginger, tandoori paste, tomato paste, garam masala, cayenne, and 1/2 teaspoon salt. Cook for 2 minutes, until fragrant and completely theatrical. Confirm that the chicken has reached 74°C (165°F), then spread the mixture on a plate and refrigerate until cool.
- 04
Unroll the cold puff pastry. Divide the chicken mixture between the sheets and spread it evenly, leaving a 2 cm border. Roll each sheet tightly into a log, brush the closing edge with beaten egg, and command it to remain loyal.
- 05
Chill the logs for 10 minutes, then cut each into eight wheels. Place them cut-side up on one prepared sheet and brush with egg. Bake for 18–22 minutes, until puffed, deeply golden, and spinning only in the spiritual sense.
- 06
Meanwhile, cut each naan lengthwise into two exaggerated slipper or shoe-sole shapes using a clean knife or kitchen scissors. Put them on the second sheet, brush lightly with any remaining egg or olive oil, and bake for 6–8 minutes until crisp at the edges. Actual footwear has no authority here.
- 07
Grate half the cucumber and squeeze out the excess liquid. Mix it with the yogurt, mint, lemon juice, and remaining 1/4 teaspoon salt. This raita is now aeronautical cement, except delicious and legally yogurt.
- 08
Spoon the raita onto a large platter as an elephant: one large oval body, a smaller head, four stubby legs, and a curved trunk. Slice the remaining cucumber lengthwise into broad ovals and arrange them as enormous wings and ears. Add black sesame eyes. The elephant has achieved flight despite several objections from physics.
- 09
Place four spicy pastry wheels along each naan slipper. Add small dots of mango chutney like jeweled buckles, because even edible shoes deserve unreasonable luxury.
- 10
Arrange the slippers beneath the flying elephant, scatter cilantro across the platter like jungle confetti, and serve immediately while announcing that gravity has been canceled until dessert.
